5 Min. FHE: Jesus Christ is my Savior and Redeemer

Jesus Christ is my Savior and Redeemer
From I Know My Savior Lives by Kimiko Hammari

Opening Song:  I Feel My Savior’s Love (Children's Songbook #74)
Opening Prayer: By Invitation
Lesson:
When Heavenly Father presented His beautiful plan to us, we were excited and shouted with joy. But we knew, and Heavenly Father knew, we could not complete our life on earth alone. No matter how hard we tried to keep the commandments, we would still make mistakes. We needed a Savior—someone who would save us from our sins.

Jesus Christ and Lucifer both offered to be our Savior. Lucifer wanted to force us to keep all the commandments, and he wanted to receive all the glory for it. Jesus, on the other hand, said he would let us grow by making our own choices. He would give His life for us in order to redeem us from our sins, and the glory would be His Father’s. Heavenly Father chose Jesus to be our Savior and Redeemer.

Because Jesus gave His life for us, we have the freedom to choose right from wrong. When we make a mistake, we can repent and be forgiven. And if we have done that, someday we can return to live with Heavenly and Jesus forever. Jesus died for all the world, but He also died for you and me. He knows and loves us each individually. Because of this, you can say that Jesus is your personal Savior and Redeemer.

Scriptures:
Read and discuss D&C 93:8–9.
•      What is the Word?
•      Why is Jesus called “the light and the Redeemer of the world”?
•      What does this phrase mean: “in him was the life of men and the light of men”?

Other scriptures:

Activity
Write down your testimony of the Savior and send it to a friend or relative in a letter. Explain why Jesus Christ is important to you. If you don’t know how to write yet, you can draw a picture and have a parent write a message on it.

Challenge
Bearing your testimony is a great way to strengthen it. Next fast Sunday, bear your testimony of the Savior during fast and testimony meeting. If this is too difficult, you may bear your testimony during FHE.

5 Min. FHE: I have been sent to earth to gain a body and to be tested

"I have been sent to earth to gain a body and to be tested"
From I Am a Child of God by Kimiko Hammari

Opening Song: I'm Trying to Be Like Jesus (Children's Songbook, 78)

Opening Prayer: By Invitation

Scriptures: Ether 3:19Moses 6:9

Art: Gospel Art Book (3): The earth

Lesson: One of the reasons Heavenly Father sent us to earth was to gain a physical body. In Genesis 1:27 we learn that we were created in the image of God. The Doctrine and Covenants explains that God has a body of flesh and bone: "The Father has a body of flesh and bones as tangible as man's; the Son also" (130:22). Heavenly Father wanted us to have a body like His so that we could become more like Him. Another purpose of this life is to be tested. Heavenly Father wants us to choose between good and evil. In the premortal life, we chose to follow Jesus Christ. Now we must prove that we will. If we keep the commandments and repent, we can live with Heavenly Father again.

Read and discuss Abraham 3:22–25.
What is the purpose of life?
How does God test us?

Activity: print out the activities below; choose the activity for older children or younger children (or both). Have younger children label the body parts. Have older children fill in the blanks with the vowels to complete the scriptures.

Challenge: Think about ways you can take care of your body (eat health food, get enough sleep, brush your teeth, wear modest clothing, and so forth). Choose one and focus on that this week.

Closing Song: Know This, That Every Soul Is Free (Hymns, 240)

Closing Prayer: By Invitation

5 Min. FHE: Love thy neighbor as thyself

Lesson: "Love thy neighbor as thyself"
by Trina Boice

Song:  Love One Another (Children‘s Songbook, pg. 136)
Opening Prayer: By Invitation
Visual Aid: Serving One Another (Gospel Art Picture Kit 615)
Principle: How can you tell a true disciple of Jesus Christ? By the way he treats other people! One way we show the Lord how much we love Him is by serving His children, our brothers and sisters. When we feel God’s love deep inside our soul, we feel a desire to reach outside ourselves and bless others. A true understanding of the gospel of Jesus Christ compels us to love and serve.
Supplies: knife, fork, spoon, plate of food, paper, crayons, 4 long pieces of string
Lesson: Show a set of silverware and ask the family to describe their different functions. Set out a plate of different kinds of foods for them to use the utensils on: Compare them to our attitudes toward others, such as:
Fork—stabs the item with an attitude of “This is mine!”
Knife—cuts everything to be a different size or separates it
Spoon—gathers small things together
Ask, “Which kind of love do you want to give?”
Activity: Talk about stories in the scriptures and invite the children to draw pictures of Jesus showing love. Then have them draw pictures of themselves showing love to others.
Game: The game of “Squeeze” encourages creative thinking and always ends in hugs. Get four long pieces of string to form a square on the floor. The object is to fit the entire group into increasingly small spaces. Once the group can fit into a square of one size, make the square smaller and try again. When the family is all squished together, have everyone hug and show love to each other.
Closing Song:  I Feel My Savior’s Love (Children’s Songbook, pg. 74)
Closing Prayer: By Invitation
Refreshments:  Southern Red Velvet Cake Bites, 101 Gourmet Cake Bites by Wendy Paul

5 Min. FHE: Love at Home

5-Minute prep Family Home Evening Ideas
Lesson: Love at Home
By Rebecca Irvine

Opening Song: Love at Home (Hymns #294)
Opening Prayer: By Invitation
Objective: To help teach family members the importance of showing love for one another in the home

Quote: “There is no substitute for the home. Its foundation is as ancient as the world, and its mission has been ordained of God from the earliest times.... There can be no genuine happiness separate and apart from the home, and every effort made to sanctify and preserve its influence is uplifting to those who toil and sacrifice for its establishment. There is no happiness without service, and there is no greater service than that which converts the home into a divine institution, and which promotes and preserves family life,” (Joseph F. Smith as quoted by Rex D. Pinegar, “‘HomeFirst,’Ensign, May 1990, 9).
Lesson: Read this story from The Friend: Janice Graham, “The Butler Did It,Friend, May 1999, 16.
Copy each of the six house pages onto cardstock (download the pages below). Cut out and glue the light gray version of the house together. Cut out, glue together, and color the black version of the house. Using an exacto knife, cut along the dotted lines where the panels will open to show the scripture verses. Glue the black version of the house on top of the gray version, being careful not to get glue behind any of the openings.
Begin your family home evening lesson by opening panel one. Read the scripture and discuss its importance. Using what the scriptures teach, write down ways that will help families to have greater love at home. Continue reading each scripture in order, much like an advent calendar. After all the scriptures are read, encourage family members to choose one of the behaviors or teachings they could work on for the month. Have each member write a goal on a paper heart. Display the hearts and the scripture house in your home for the month as a visual reminder.
Activity: Randomly assign each family member the name of someone else in the family. Sit in a circle and have one person begin describing their family member using only loving and positive words, but without giving the person’s name. Other family members must guess who is being described. Take turns until every name has been guessed.
Closing Song: Love Is Spoken Here (Children’s Songbook #190)
Closing Prayer: By Invitation
Refreshments: Sugar cookies cut out in heart and house shapes.
