5 Min. FHE: I have been sent to earth to gain a body and to be tested

"I have been sent to earth to gain a body and to be tested"
From I Am a Child of God by Kimiko Hammari

Opening Song: I'm Trying to Be Like Jesus (Children's Songbook, 78)

Opening Prayer: By Invitation

Scriptures: Ether 3:19Moses 6:9

Art: Gospel Art Book (3): The earth

Lesson: One of the reasons Heavenly Father sent us to earth was to gain a physical body. In Genesis 1:27 we learn that we were created in the image of God. The Doctrine and Covenants explains that God has a body of flesh and bone: "The Father has a body of flesh and bones as tangible as man's; the Son also" (130:22). Heavenly Father wanted us to have a body like His so that we could become more like Him. Another purpose of this life is to be tested. Heavenly Father wants us to choose between good and evil. In the premortal life, we chose to follow Jesus Christ. Now we must prove that we will. If we keep the commandments and repent, we can live with Heavenly Father again.

Read and discuss Abraham 3:22–25.
What is the purpose of life?
How does God test us?

Activity: print out the activities below; choose the activity for older children or younger children (or both). Have younger children label the body parts. Have older children fill in the blanks with the vowels to complete the scriptures.

Challenge: Think about ways you can take care of your body (eat health food, get enough sleep, brush your teeth, wear modest clothing, and so forth). Choose one and focus on that this week.

Closing Song: Know This, That Every Soul Is Free (Hymns, 240)

Closing Prayer: By Invitation
