My Loving Vigil Keeping
by Carla Kelly

About the Book: Della's giving up all the comforts of bustling Salt Lake City to teach school in a rural coal mining camp. Little does she know, she may soon be giving up her heart as well. But when tragedy strikes in the Scofield Mine, Della's life is changed forever. Based on true events, this thrilling new romance from award-winning and bestselling author Carla Kelly is a must-read!

Rave Review by Rosemarie Howard For the Deseret News: "Carla Kelly’s new novel “My Loving Vigil Keeping” is a tender historical romance set in the Utah mining town of Winter Quarters at the turn of the 20th century. . . . The characters have depth; dialogue flows easily and feels authentic. It’s evident the story is well-researched and told by an author who has written many other such novels. . . Kelly dedicates the book to the 200 or more miners who died in the Scofield mining disaster on May 1, 1900." . . . Read On . . .

"Homework? Of course. Crushes? Sure. But who knew seventh grade included superpowers? . . . The Kindling, by author Braden Bell is a page-turning adventure filled with excitement, suspense, humor, magic, and fun, perfect for middle-grade readers and adults alike.  . . . The story also reflects deeper themes of family, loyalty and the hope that good will triumph over evil.   With all the books available for youth that don’t bother providing anything edifying, I was pleased to read a book that not only kept me entertained but left me feeling uplifted." . . . "In the new release, “Book of Mormon Children: A Collection of Stories Set in Book of Mormon Times,” author Merrilee Browne Boyack uses fictional characters and stories intermingled with truth and real characters from the Book of Mormon to help relate them to children. . . .What Boyack does so well in this book is draw the reader in while keeping each individual chapter short enough to be completed in one bed-time story sitting. To get you ready for Demons (Vol. 2 in the Seers Trilogy), Here's a great review for Seers - You've got time to get it and read it before Demons hits the shelves.

by Heather Frost

About the Book:  For Kate Bennet, surviving the car wreck that killed her parents means big changes -- and even bigger problems. As she begins to see auras and invisible people, Kate must learn to trust Patrick O'Donnell, a handsome Guardian, or risk her life being overrun with Demons. She soon realizes that both she and her heart are in big-time trouble.

"I thought the first book of the Seers Trilogy was well written by an author wise beyond her years. I could tell the love that was put into the book. It’s well thought out and something to pass your weekend with. I love the world in Seers. It was written in a way that shows demons, auras and guardians can exist with us being none the wiser. I can say that this book will have your imagination flowing, heart racing and leave you wishing for a Patrick O’Donnell of your own."  . . . 5min.FHE: Jesus is a God of Miracles, Lesson 1: Calms the Storm

Jesus Calms the Storm

We are going to do a series of 4 lessons on this topic
Lessons come from Tiny Talks, Vol. 10
by Lee Ann Setzer

Song:  Master, the Tempest is Raging (Hymn #105)
Opening Prayer: By Invitation
Scripture: Mark 4:39
Visual Aid: Jesus Calms the Sea (Gospel Art Book, pg. 40)
Lesson: One evening, Jesus and His disciples set out across the Sea of Galilee in a boat. Jesus went to sleep while His disciples sailed the ship. He was still sleeping when a great storm blew up. In the wind and the waves and the darkness, the disciples were afraid. They woke Jesus up in a panic. He stood and told the sea, “Peace, be still.” The wind calmed down, and suddenly the storm ended. The disciples, who didn’t yet understand that Jesus was the Son of God, were amazed at this miracle (see Mark4:35– 41).

Sometimes we get “stormy” inside: angry, or frightened, or worried, or discouraged. Just as He did with the Sea of Galilee, Jesus can calm an upset heart or mind if we let Him bring us the peace He promises.

Thought Question:  How have you felt peace through the gospel of Jesus Christ?

Challenge:  Over the next week, whenever something happens that causes you to feel “stormy” inside, stop, take a deep breath and say a prayer for peace.  Share your experiences next week.

Closing Song:  Heavenly Father, Now I Pray (Children Songbook, pg. 19)
Closing Prayer: By Invitation
Refreshments:  1 Minute Brownie in a Mug

Blog Tour Giveaway: A Sisterhood of Strength by Diony George

President Monson has repeatedly expressed that even in our busy, bustling lives, “it’s the service that counts.” And no one knows that better than the quiet, humble women of the Relief Society. Working together, faithful women form a sisterhood of service, selflessness, and ultimately strength to share with each other and the entire world.

Published by Cedar Fort, Inc.

About the Book: Experience for yourself the pure love that inspires ordinary women to serve and accept service in a truly extraordinary manner. This inspiring collection of true stories from the lives of women just like you is told with heartwarming sincerity. Perfect for sharing, this remarkable book is sure to uplift, encourage, and cheer any woman, whether it's her turn to serve or be served.

Whether you win the book or not, you can click here to read and be inspired by a few snippets from the book - Enjoy!
About the Author:   Diony George is a wife, mother of seven, and grandmother of two originally from Alaska, currently living in Utah. She now considers herself a true city girl at heart and will readily admit she doesn't miss the giant mosquitoes or the cold and long, dark winters way up North, but absolutely misses the fresh seafood. When she's not imagining a new plot-line or typing frantically away at her computer, she loves to spend time with her family, read (her favorite genre is romantic suspense) travel, cook or bake something delicious, sew, or work on crafts.

The best advice she would give on how to become a better writer is to read and write everyday!

Kay's Kritique:  Sisterhood of Strength is a wonderful and inspiring book, sharing true stories showing women at their best -- their true natures shining through.  I was especially touched by the poem at the beginning of the book which I could apply to not only my sisters in Relief Society but also my 5 real life sisters that I grew up with.  Here the full picture you see on the left - me with 3 of my 5 sisters.

God Gave Me a Sister
When God sent me down to earth,
He knew how hard it would be.
He knew I’d need someone to love and understand me.
So God gave me a sister,
a sister as a friend. A special soul who’d love me and
help me endure to the end.

God knew I would grow weary,
He knew the days would be long. He knew the trials would
come often, He knew I’d have to be strong;
God knew I would have problems,
He knew I’d need a helping hand. He knew I would want
someone
to listen with her heart and understand.

When sisters truly love each other, their spirits often unite
with the added strength of a sister,
it’s easier to do what’s right. That’s why God gave us all sisters,
Sisters as our friends.
Special souls who love us and help us endure to the end.
Oh God, help us to be sisters,
Sisters as well as friends,
Special souls loving and helping others endure to the end.

5Min.FHE-Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ

Lesson from
By Kimiko Hammari

Song:  Book of Mormon Stories (Children Songbook, pg. 118)
Opening Prayer: By Invitation
Scriptures: 2 Nephi 33:10 and D&C 17:6
Visual Aid: Jesus Teaching in the Western Hemisphere (Gospel Art Book, pg. 82); Jesus Healing the Nephites (Gospel Art Book, pg. 83)
Lesson:  As the prophet of the Restoration, Joseph Smith translated the Book of Mormon. The angel Moroni appeared to Joseph and told him that there was an ancient record buried in the Hill Cumorah near Joseph’s home. The record contained the writings of prophets in the Americas who taught of Jesus Christ.

The Book of Mormon is another testament, or witness, of Jesus Christ. It is scripture, just like the Bible. Many people believe that when Jesus was on the earth, He only ministered to the people in Jerusalem. But the Book of Mormon teaches that Jesus loves all people very much and visited the Nephites in America. The Book of Mormon does not replace the Bible. The Bible is the word of God as well. When we study both the Bible and the Book of Mormon, we can more fully understand Jesus Christ’s teachings.

Thought Questions:  Read and discuss the 8th Articles of Faith.
Why do we believe the Bible to be the word of God, “as far as it is translated correctly”?
Is the Bible or the Book of Mormon more important?

Challenge:  As a family, read from the Book of Mormon each day this week. If you already do this, make your scripture study more challenging by memorizing a verse from one of the chapters you are studying this week.

Closing Song:  The Iron Rod (Hymn #284)
Closing Prayer: By Invitation
Activity for All Ages: As a family, read one of your children’s favorite Book of Mormon stories. Then have an older child (or a parent) and a younger child summarize the story in their own words. Most likely, the older child’s account will be more detailed. Explain to your children that their two summaries are similar to how we use the Book of Mormon and Bible. Each of the children’s versions contained important details, but it took two children to accurately tell the whole story. Discuss how the Book of Mormon complements the Bible.
Refreshments:  Ice Cream Sandwich Cake
from All over the internet – Here’s my version:

24 Ice Cream Sandwiches
16 oz. frozen whipped topping thawed
2 bags mini peanut butter cups (in the bag not individually wrapped ones) You could use 1 bag and cut them each in half for better coverage or the wrapped one cut up, but I was too lazy and wanted to put it together fast.
1 bottle caramel sundae topping (I like the squeeze top one)
1 bottle chocolate syrup with squeeze top

Lay half of the ice cream sandwiches (whole) in the bottom of a 9 x 13-inch pan, trimming the last couple to get complete coverage. Top with half of the whipped topping, 1 bag of mini peanut butter cups, drizzle one way with caramel topping, drizzle other way with chocolate syrup.  Lay down another layer of ice cream sandwiches.  Top with remaining whipped topping and spread out evenly with a knife, making a lip around the edge so the sundae topping won't run out and over the edges (or you can line the pan with foil like I did in the picture to build up the sides of the pan).  Top with the other bag of mini peanut butter cups, drizzle again with caramel & chocolate syrup as before.  Freeze for several hours (or overnight) before serving.

Alternate version I haven’t tried yet but sounds yummy too! - Banana Split Version (sliced bananas, strawberry sundae topping and crushed Oreos)

Have fun and experiment with different flavored sundae toppings, different candies, and nuts.  You can also add fruit.

What would be your family's favorite Ice Cream Sandwich Cake combination? Share with us in a comment.

5Min.FHE-Preparing for Baptism

by Rebecca Irvine

Opening Prayer: By Invitation
Objective:   To help family members understand the importance of baptism and the necessity of being baptized by one holding the priesthood.
Directions:   Copy and color the Preparing for Baptism pages , placing them on a display surface joined at the dashed lines. Copy the water droplet scriptures onto a light blue card stock paper. Cut out and laminate the scriptures for durability, if desired.

Visual Aid: Baptism

Lesson: Teach family members that baptism is the first essential ordinance required to return to live with Heavenly Father again. Learn more about the ordinance of baptism by starting with the bottom question on the Preparing for Baptism poster. Read each of the corresponding scriptures and discuss how the question is answered. After reading the scriptures, place them (words down) on the Preparing for Baptism poster over the question answered, as though the font is beginning to be filled. Continue reading the next set of scriptures to answer the second question. Repeat this process until all the questions have been answered and the font is “full.” Display the Preparing for Baptism poster in your home for the month as a visual reminder of the importance of baptism.

Activity: Encourage family members who have been baptized to share their memories of this special occasion. If they have not previously done so, have them write in their journal about what they remember.

Quote: “When we understand our baptismal covenant and the gift of the Holy Ghost, it will change our lives and will establish our total allegiance to the kingdom of God,” (Robert D. Hales, “The Covenant of Baptism: To Be in the Kingdom and of the Kingdom,” Ensign, Nov. 2000, 7).

Closing Prayer: By Invitation
Refreshments:  Let family members “immerse” fruit in melted chocolate, fondue style.
What is your favorite food (fruit or other) to "immerse" in melted chocolate?  Share in a comment with your email address to be entered to win Family Home Evening Adventures by Rebecca Irving.
