About the Book:  Forced to seek work wherever they can, Sal's family may never have a place to call home again. But this can't keep Sal from dreaming of a future with Ben---a boy she meets up with every year at the end of the picking season. This heartwarming story about growing up in the Great Depression will resonate with modern readers of all ages.

Kay's Kritique:  At Season's End transports you back to much simpler time.  And while times were very hard during the Great Depression, Sal and her family knew what was really important in life - family, friends and serving others - as they were "gettin' and a goin'" from place to place trying to find work and stay together.  A great story to sit back and enjoy a good read.  I'd give it 5 stars.

Opening Prayer: By Invitation
Scriptures:  2 Nephi 3:11; Isaiah 11:1; D&C 1:29

Joseph receives plates
Lesson:  Three years after the First Vision, the angel Moroni appeared to Joseph Smith and told him God had a special work for him to do. Joseph was to translate the gold plates, a record of the people in ancient America. Jesus had visited these people and established His Church among them, just as He did with the people in the Bible.

After several more years of preparation, Joseph received the gold plates at the Hill Cumorah. Joseph did not know the language the gold plates were written in, but that did not matter. Joseph also received the Urim and Thummim, which helped him to translate the sacred record. With the help of God, Joseph was able to complete the translation.

Read and discuss JS—H 1:59–60.

·      What did Joseph Smith receive in addition to the gold plates?
·      Why did so many people want the gold plates? How did Joseph keep them safe?
·      Where are the gold plates today?

Challenge:  Read from the Book of Mormon with your family each day this week. It’s okay if you can only spend a few minutes doing this, but be sure to discuss what you have read and ask your parents any questions you may have.

Closing Song:  The Golden Plates (Children Songbook, pg. 86b) or Truth Eternal (Hymn #4)
Closing Prayer: By Invitation

5 Minute FHE - Mothers

5 Minute FHE
Mother’s Day
by Rebecca Irving
Song:  I Often Go Walking (Children Songbook, pg. 202)
Opening Prayer: By Invitation
Objective:  To help family members gain a greater appreciation for mothers in celebration of Mother’s Day
Quote: “There is no role in life more essential and more eternal than that of motherhood,” (M. Russell Ballard, “Daughters of God,” Ensign, May 2008, 108–10).
Visual Aid: Empty Vase & Paper Roses with scriptures on the back (see Directions below) or cut Scriptures into strips and put in a bowl to draw from during the lesson.
Lesson:  Review with family members the importance of women, especially mothers, in Heavenly Father’s plan. Brainstorm with family members some of the many things mothers do to make family life better. If using the paper roses: Take turns reading the scripture roses and discussing their importance. Place the scripture roses in the vase after each has been read. Display the bouquet of scripture roses throughout the month as a visual reminder to show gratitude for mothers.  If using the scripture strips:  Take turns reading the scripture strips and discussing their importance.

Activity/Story:  Take time to teach family members about grandmothers (including great-grandmothers) with whom they may not be familiar. Show pictures, read journal entries, and look at other meaningful family mementos that serve as reminders of these women. Tell about the sacrifices these women made as mothers to help serve their families.  OR you can read the story - Alma J. Yates,“Roses Twice,” New Era, May 1984, 44
Closing Song:  Mother, I Love You (Children Songbook, pg. 207)
Closing Prayer: By Invitation
Refreshments:  Chocolate Roses or Cake Mix Cookies (see Recipe below)
Cake Mix Cookies from Real Mom Kitchen by Laura Powell

1 box cake mix (you choose the flavor – devil’s food is our favorite)
2 eggs
1/3 cup oil
water (I use around 1/8 to 1/4 cup)
any other ingredients you like
Mix the cake mix, eggs, and oil. Add enough water to make the mixture the consistency of cookie dough. Mix in any other ingredients you like such as dried fruit, chips, or nuts. (I use about 1 1/2 cups peanut butter chips with the devil’s food mix) Bake on an un-greased cookie sheet at 350 degrees for 8-10 minutes until set in the middle. Make around 2 dozen cookies.

Directions for Paper Roses: Copy the rose page three times onto colored card-stock paper. Cut out the scripture circles and the roses. Attach the scripture circles to the back of the roses. Laminate the scripture roses for durability, if desired. Attach a green pipe cleaner to each scripture rose as a stem. Have the vase on hand for use during the lesson.
