Lesson:
Three years after the First
Vision, the angel Moroni appeared to Joseph Smith and told him God had a
special work for him to do. Joseph was to translate the gold plates, a record
of the people in ancient America. Jesus had visited these people and
established His Church among them, just as He did with the people in the Bible.
After
several more years of preparation, Joseph received the gold plates at the Hill
Cumorah. Joseph did not know the language the gold plates were written in, but
that did not matter. Joseph also received the Urim and Thummim, which helped
him to translate the sacred record. With the help of God, Joseph was able to
complete the translation.
