My Friends Are Good Examples to Me 5 Min-FHE 5-20-13

My Friends Are Good Examples to Me- 5 Min. FHE
From Tiny Talks Vol. 12- Choose the Right
by Heidi Doxey

Opening Song:Jesus Is Our Loving Friend ” (Children’s Songbook #58)

Opening Prayer: By Invitation

Scripture: Daniel 3:17

Lesson: Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were best friends.
They lived in a place where everyone was supposed to worship a statue called an idol instead of worshiping God. The three friends knew that this wasn’t right. They refused to pray to the idol. Even when the king decided to punish them by burning them in a big furnace, the three friends stuck together. Jesus came to protect them so they weren’t burned in the fire. All three of the friends were okay.

It’s important to have friends, but you need to make sure you choose good friends. Good friends help you to keep the commandments. They don’t try to get you to do bad things because they know that choosing the right will make you happy.

You can be a good friend to others by encouraging them to do what is right. When you choose good friends, they will always be there to help you and make you
happy.

Thought Question: Who are some of your best friends? How do they help you to choose the right?

Activity: Make a list as a family for “What Makes a Good Friend” and talk about how each family member can work on those qualities to become an even better friend. Pick one good friend to write a note to expressing thanks for their good example and friendship, tell them how much they mean to you.

Heavenly Father put me in a Family 5-Min FHE 5-13-13

Heavenly Father planned for me to come to a family 5-Min. FHE

From I am a Child of God
by Kimiko Hammari

Opening Song:Families Can Be Together Forever ” (Hymnal #300)

Opening Prayer: By Invitation

Lesson: Families are the most important part of Heavenly Father’s plan for us. One of the first commandments Adam and Eve received was to have children. Heavenly Father wants His spirit children to come to earth and receive a body. When a married man and woman have children, they help Heavenly Father fulfill His plan. Another purpose of families is to help each other make it back to Heavenly Father. Parents should teach their children the gospel and help them keep the commandments.

But often children can teach their parents as well and be good examples to them. Having a loving family brings one of the greatest joys in this life and in the life to come. When we love and serve our family members, we begin to understand the great love that Heavenly Father has for us.

Scriptures: Read and discuss Doctrine and Covenants 88:119–126.

• What can we do to have a successful family?

• How can we show our family members that we
love them?

5-Min FHE Mother's Day 5-6-12

Mother’s Day 5-Min. FHE

From Family Home Evening Adventures
by Rebecca Irvine

Opening Song: Mother, I Love You” (Children’s Songbook, #207)

Opening Prayer: By Invitation

Objective: To help family members gain a greater appreciation for mothers in celebration of Mother’s Day.

Quote: “There is no role in life more essential and more eternal than that of motherhood,” (M. Russell Ballard, “Daughters of God,” Ensign, May 2008, 108–10).

Story: Alma J. Yates, “Roses Twice,” New Era, May 1984, 44

Directions: Copy the rose page three times onto colored cardstock paper. Cut out the scripture circles and the roses. Attach the scripture circles to the back of the roses. Laminate the scripture roses for durability, if desired. Attach a green pipe cleaner to each scripture rose as a stem. Have the vase on hand for use during the lesson.
Supplies Needed: 31 green pipe cleaners and a vase.

Lesson: Review with family members the importance of women, especially mothers, in Heavenly Father’s plan. Brainstorm with family members some of the many things mothers do to make family life better. Take turns reading the scripture roses and discussing their importance. Place the scripture roses in the vase after each has been read. Display the bouquet of scripture roses throughout the month as a visual reminder to show gratitude for mothers.

Activity: Take time to teach family members about grandmothers (including great-grandmothers) with whom they may not be familiar. Show pictures, read journal entries, and look at other meaningful family mementos that serve as reminders of these women. Tell about the sacrifices these women made as mothers to help serve their families.

Closing Song: The Dearest Names” (Hymnal #208)

Closing Prayer:  By Invitation

from Laura Powell’s Blog

Ingredients

·   Cookie:
·   2 cups butter
·   2 cups sugar
·   2 eggs
·   2 tsp. vanilla extract
·   1 Tbsp. baking powder
·   1 teaspoon salt
·   6 cups flour
·   Frosting:
·   2 cups powdered sugar
·   ¼ teaspoon salt
·   1 teaspoon almond extract
·   8 oz pkg light cream cheese, softened
·   1¾ cups whipping cream
·   fresh strawberries, sliced
·   fresh blueberries

Instructions

1.     Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
2.     In a large mixing bowl, cream butter and sugar with a mixer.
3.     Add eggs and vanilla and blend well.
4.     Then add the baking powder, salt, and flour. Mix until a cookie dough forms.
5.     Roll out to ¼ to ⅓ inch thickness and cut into desired shapes. There is no need for flour on your counter to work with this dough. I used a 3 inch round cookie cutter and a 3 inch scalloped biscuit cutter to shape the cookies.
6.     Bake on ungreased cookie sheet at 350 degrees for 8-10 minutes or just until beginning to turn brown around the edges. Don’t over cook.
7.     Allow cookies to cool.
8.     For the frosting: In another bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, salt, almond extract and cream cheese.
9.     In another bowl, whip the cream until stiff peaks. Ad ⅓ of the whipped cream to the cream cheese mixture and fold together.
10.  Add the remaining whipped cream to the cream cheese mixture and fold until well blended.
11.  Use immediately, or cover and chill until ready to use.
12.  To assemble tarts: frost each cookie with the frosting and then top with the strawberries and blueberries.
*Notes
I was able to make 34 (3-inch) round cookies with this recipe.
